Iceland South
So I would pack my gear on Friday night and go to bed at midnight. After 3h I was woken by a mosquito, went to the bathroom, had some breakfast and was ready for the road. The first complication was getting to the bus station. No taxi would answer, so not to be late for the shuttle I took my car and left it in the parking lot so my sister would take it the next day back home. Shuttle I found on https://prevoz.org/, paid 25 EUR to Vienna airport, start at 4:30. On the way talked to driver Slavko and other passengers, we had one stop close to Graz. I arrived at the airport at 8:50 and had to spend some time until 12:25, eat a homemade sandwich, bought a bottle of Gin at duty-free shop 29 EUR, which they really checked at security. I had one beer 8 EUR while watching people taking a photo with Gustavo Dudamel. On the plane (Wizzair 105 €), I changed places so one couple would sit together, got window seat instead of a middle row but got some chatty neighbors, a lady from Austria and gentleman from Slovakia. As I saw there will be no sleep on the plane I ordered two beers for 7 EUR and enjoyed the view from the plane. For the budget flight, it was OK experience.
At Keflavík I bought Schweppes and cutlery 5 EUR. Waited 30min for transfer to rent a car https://www.goiceland.com/. There I was nicely surprised, I was upgraded from a small car to Dacia Duster for free, my home for the next 3 days. Paid 100 EUR plus insurance 85 EUR (premium, probably to much), half of what I would otherwise pay for Duster. I made approx 1.900 km, diesel was 176 EUR (1.6 EUR/l, average consumption between 5-6l/100km, average speed 60 km/h). I decided I will go eastward and finish in Reykjavik.
So I started engine around 16h local time, first stop was at Strandakirkja, the church had typical Scandinavian architecture, historical background, nice views and rocky coast. On the way saw some lava fields and enjoyed the smell of sulfur. As I proceeded I picked hitchhiker, a teacher in elementary school, on way to her niece’s prom. We had a nice chat about Iceland. After I left her at Hveragerði, I turned to Selfoss where I stopped for a beer 8 EUR to think over where to go next and a decision was Geysir. The landscape there was showing geothermal activity, old Geysir was peaceful but Strokkur was active approx each 8min. Got on photo smaller outburst (7m).
After a few repetitions, I went to souvenir shop, 4 EUR for postcards, and from there continued to Ring road. On way saw some greenhouses heated by geothermal water, also few raindrops fell. Stopped at a gas station, bought some Pringles 3 EUR. The next stop was Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a nice one with great sunlight, green landscape, rainbow. It is possible to go behind it.
Later I picked up another hitchhiker, Polish that was returning from a big hike to the volcano. I drove him to the guesthouse where he was working. On way there, we stopped at Skogafoss waterfall with the bigger flow than previous, looked bit ominous in shadow. I decided to skip a hike to airplane remains. Close to Vik I was tired and decided to rest a bit, had dinner and had drink or two, enjoying birds singing at midnight, even tried to sleep a bit.
