Balkan 20.12.2008-4.1.2009

The decision was made to make a circle around the Balkans with Boško during the New Year’s holidays (Serbia, Romania, Moldova, Transnistria, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo)

Recommendation

When I plan my travels I use those pages below to help me find the right transport, accommodation, ticket, …

Money

Each country has its own currency:

  • Dinar in Serbia (exchange rate between 80 and 90 dinars for €), we spent around 200 € together with birthday party and train to Romania
  • Lev in Romania (less than 4 levs for €). We spent more than 200 €, more than half of both trains (Moldova, Bulgaria)
  • Lei in Moldova (13 lei for €). We spend around € 150
  • Ruble in Transnistria (9 rubles for $). We only spent € 20 there
  • Lev to Bulgaria (less than 2 levs for €). We spent a little over € 100.
  • Denar in Macedonia (61 denars for €). We spend 70 €.
  • Lek in Albania (122 drugs for €). We spend about 180 €
  • In Kosovo, they use €, which we spend 120. Another € 200 goes to tickets bought with credit cards.

All in all, I spent around € 650. Without a birthday party, it would be under € 600.

Transport

Balkan 20.12.2008-4.1.2009 1
on train to Moldova

Most of the time these were (mini) buses and trains. We also used some taxis, we hitchhiked, and last but not least we crossed two borders on foot.

Food and drinks

Balkan 20.12.2008-4.1.2009 3
meal in Tirana with locals

We ate all the classic food for the Balkans. So kebabs and burek were common. The drink was usually beer, and the brandy was drunk in Belgrade and Tirana.

Most of the time we slept in cheap hotels and hostels (approximately € 10 per night per person). We slept on vehicles for four nights and at a friend’s place for 2 nights.
