Barru restaurant in Ljubljana

Barru restaurant is Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine (nikkei) brought to Ljubljana by Grega Božičnik (also owner of Romeo, Tokyo Piknik, Sushimama, and Fetiche). The head chef is Ruben Chaves Atunga, while Tomas Bares is helping. After work and before the murder mystery game with Gregor, Teja, and Tedej, I visited this small place by the Ljubljanica River. The setting is like a sushi bar, and I took a seat by the counter (barru).

The main spot on the menu is for ceviche, tiraditos, and sushi. There are some meat dishes, soups, cocktails, and desserts. With the help of a waitress, I tried a few different options.

Tiraditos Yellowtail: thin slices of yellowtail with ponzu sauce, yellow chili cream, and furikake (23). The first dish was like fish carpaccio, between Peruvian ceviche and Japanese sashimi; fresh, acidic, and spicy.

ARV roll: fried shrimp (8pcs), avocado, white fish, furikake, and negui (16.9€). Also Nigiri salmon (2pcs): salmon, white butter truffle, mandle salt (8.5€). Different setting for rolls, Nigiri was nice, salmon pieces, but finished with a burner. They suggested no soya sauce as it is already seasoned enough. Sushi with a Peruvian twist.

Ceviche Tuna: Tuna marinated in Japanese sauce, coriander, red onion, avocado, edamame, fried nori (25€). I had in mind to finish, but then decided to try Ceviche with tuna as well (Peruvian acidity/onions/coriander and Japanese edamame/nori/sauce).

Cana sparkling water 3€. Altogether 76.4 with tip 84€. The dishes are innovative and interestingly presented, bringing a fresh option to Ljubljana’s culinary scene. Raw fish is the main ingredient, prepared with a fusion of the Peruvian and Japanese influences. But in my opinion, they are a bit too expensive.
