Hike from Piran to Koper

Boštjan called and explained his ideal tour for Saturday, Piran-Koper, a cheap bus, a little walking, pizza, and back home. In the beginning, I was in doubt but he convinced me and after a couple of times we agreed and he bought tickets for the bus to Piran (3 €).

I got up before 7am on Saturday, ate breakfast, and called a taxi. Taxi (5 €) takes quite some time and I was already worried but I arrived at the station on time. Everything went well and I was on the Nomago bus on time. Now it was time for more than a 2-hour drive to Piran in bad weather. After Postojna we go from the highway to the regional road, which means bends and more time.

Finally, we are in Piran, where it is a few degrees warmer than in Ljubljana and it is not raining, but it is still foggy. We set off a little after 10am towards the city. on the way there is a maritime museum with an old underwater suit and in the water, there was a huge jellyfish (half a meter diameter). We started to climb and the path to Fiesa along the coast was closed, you needed to climb and crawl to get past the obstacles.

After half an hour we are in Fiesa and now followed the second slope where we descend through Pacug to Strunjan salt pans. Now again we ascend to the lookout point Strunjan cross. After an hour and a half, we take a 10-minute break for cigarettes and some fruit. The path is quite muddy and the view of Moon Bay from the highest Adriatic cliff is shrouded in fog.

We descend towards Simon’s Bay again using some shortcuts. In Izola, we bought a beer (€ 1) in a shop and sat in a park by the coast for 15 minutes. It was necessary to warm up our legs again and do the last part of the way. This part is flat and by the water, maybe a little less interesting. On the Koper side, we moved past Žusterna and along the promenade to the Grand Koper hotel.

Grand Koper

Here we order pizza, I take Sagittarius (cooked prosciutto, olives, and artichokes) and a local draft beer. The interior was nice, the waiters are responsive, the pizza was quickly on our table. We paid all together for both € 26. Beer is not a surplus, the pizza is delicious and with a little peperoncino oil it was great, the knife could be a little better.

Now our stomachs are full but we still have to get to the bus station. He walked the last 20 minutes and soon after we were on the bus (2.5 €). This line is all the way on the highway and after a bit more than an hour we were in Ljubljana at 5 pm. Another taxi home (5 €), because after the shower it was necessary to get back to the city to celebrate Katka’s birthday.

I would sum up: a beautiful day on the coast, cheap bus transport (€ 5.5), bad weather (fog), lots of walking (20 km), good pizza.
