Roger Waters – The Wall Live – Zagreb ’11
With Gregor, Tedej, and Tone we drove to Zagreb. We were going to a concert by Roger Waters, a member of the cult Pink Floyd bend. After 30 years since it was published and toured (Waters wrote it when he had problems with fame and was building wall) and more then 20 years after it was last performed live (fall of the Berlin wall) the Wall was back. For Gregor, this was a must, while he was a great fan. I was still a bit shaken from the accident the previous year. We paid for ticket 370 HRK, approx 51 €. The concert was in a full Arena venue (17.000) and it started a bit after 20:00.
They are building the Wall on stage, physically and with lyrics until it is torn apart in the end. It all starts with a clip from Spartacus movie by Kubrik (I’m Spartacus). While performing Mother on the screen was printed NEMA JEBENE ŠANSE (NO FUCKING WAY) when lyrics came to “Mother, should I trust the government?”. The whole sentiment was anti-war oriented. Also, Orwell Big brother was mentioned. He spoke a bit Croatian and commented that he needed too long, 40 years until he came for the first time in the Balkans. Bend has done a great job, his son Harry Waters was on keyboards. Roger wore a black leather coat in the beginning, even played the trumpet for a bit later on. Orphans were singing Another brick in the wall. Pink pig balloon was circulating above our heads.
The wall/screen was huge (70 meters) and performance was dominated by it. Comparing to earlier versions of this tour it was updated with new examples of lives lost, moving from personal anxiety to social injustice. The concert was offering great audio and visual entertainment. In the end, we got red confetti. Tone drove us home, while we were full of impressions from the concert.
